Senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke, speaking on the Football Insider podcast, explained that chairman Daniel Levy has collaborated closely with Real Betis to structure an advantageous agreement for Spurs.

The deal stems from negotiations surrounding Giovani Lo Celso’s transfer, which included a £21 million priority purchase option for Cardoso.

Crucially, if Spurs select against activating the clause, they are awarded to a percentage of any future sale, ensuring the club retains influence over the 23-year-old’s next move.

As it stands, Tottenham are weighing up whether to trigger Cardoso’s release clause in January, especially with Aston Villa reportedly eyeing the USA international.

Villa’s interest could push Tottenham to finalise the deal quickly to avoid strengthening a rival in their pursuit of Champions League qualification.

Cardoso, highly rated at both Tottenham and Real Betis, has been crucial in the Spanish side’s midfield.

He has made 15 appearances this season, delivering standout performances, including a man-of-the-match display in a 1-0 victory for Betis.

With 17 caps for the USMNT and growing interest from across Europe, the midfielder remains a hot talent.

Despite this, Tottenham retain control over his future thanks to Levy’s careful negotiations with Betis.
