AdminTottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a seven-game suspension and fined £100,000 by the Football Association following an investigation into racist remarks made about teammate Son Heung-Min and the South Korea national team.
The controversy shoots from comments Bentancur made on a Uruguayan TV show this summer, where he suggested that Son and his teammates “looked the same.”
The remarks were widely condemned after the clip circulated online, prompting public statements from both Spurs and Son himself, criticising the remarks but seeking to move forward.
The FA’s findings mean Bentancur will miss a series of crucial domestic fixtures, including Premier League matches against Manchester City, Fulham, Bournemouth, Chelsea, and Liverpool, as well as the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester United.
His suspension will last until Boxing Day, when he could return to face Nottingham Forest.
However, the FA ban does not apply to European competitions, allowing the midfielder to participate in Tottenham’s upcoming Europa League fixtures against Roma and Rangers.
So far, Bentancur has featured in three of Spurs’ four matches in the competition, with the team currently sitting seventh in the standings.
An FA statement confirmed: “Rodrigo Bentancur denied this charge, but the independent Regulatory Commission found it to be proven and forced his sanctions following a hearing.”
