West Ham supporters needed no further reminder of Mateus Fernandes’ talent, but his nomination for the PFA Young Player of the Year award has now underlined just how highly he is regarded across the game.
The midfielder has been one of the few shining lights in a difficult campaign at the London Stadium, producing performances full of energy, composure and maturity beyond his years.

His rise has naturally attracted attention from elsewhere, and speculation over his future continues to grow ahead of the summer transfer window.
Until recently, Manchester United appeared to be leading the chase for Fernandes. One football agent even told C&H: “you’ll never get £84m for Fernandes”, although the Portugal youngster remains one of the most sought-after talents in the league.
Now, however, Arsenal have reportedly entered the picture, with Mikel Arteta said to be a huge admirer of the West Ham midfielder.
For many inside the club’s fanbase, that possibility is simply impossible to stomach.
There is already enough frustration over the departure of Declan Rice to Arsenal, and the idea of another elite young talent making the same journey across London would leave supporters furious.
West Ham may eventually struggle to keep Fernandes, especially if interest continues to grow, but allowing Arteta to secure one of Europe’s brightest prospects would feel like history repeating itself all over again.
