Senegal head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup determined to write another memorable chapter in their football history, with West Ham United defender El Hadji Malick Diouf believing the Lions of Teranga can once again challenge the world’s best.
The West Africans famously stunned defending champions France in the opening match of the 2002 World Cup before reaching the quarter-finals on their tournament debut. Now, 24 years later, Diouf hopes Senegal can emulate that achievement in North America.

Having qualified unbeaten, Senegal face another demanding group featuring France, Norway and Iraq. Despite the challenge, the 24-year-old insists confidence within the squad is high.
“I think first it was a dream to play the World Cup. As a Senegalese player, we don’t have the pressure, but we have it a little bit because we have to do better than before.
“We have to go again because we have a really good team, a really good squad. So we don’t have to think about the other teams.
We just have to go play our game, try to get the wins and try to qualify for the second round. So I think it’s our objective. It’s our goal.”
Diouf is particularly excited by the prospect of facing France, whom he describes as “probably the best” team in the world.
“We can do the same again! We want to repeat that. We want to be the same legends, so we have to go and make big performances and results.”
