Aston Villa’s pre-season meeting with Bayern Munich in Hong Kong could have a major impact on the club’s transfer plans, with talks over João Palhinha potentially set to resume.
According to Sport 1, via Sport Witness, senior figures from both clubs are expected to use the meeting to reopen discussions over the Portugal international after negotiations stalled earlier in the summer.
Palhinha has returned to Bayern following his loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur, but Vincent Kompany reportedly does not see the experienced midfielder as part of his plans. Bayern are willing to sell, although their asking price remains a major obstacle.
The midfielder enjoyed a strong campaign with Tottenham, scoring five goals and providing two assists in 33 Premier League appearances during the 2025/26 season. His late winner against Everton on the final day helped secure Spurs’ survival.
However, Aston Villa may have good reason to think twice before committing to a permanent deal.
João Gomes has already arrived from Wolves for £35 million, offering similar ball-winning qualities with greater mobility and a younger profile.

Boubacar Kamara is also back from injury, while Amadou Onana and John McGinn provide further options in midfield.
With Palhinha reportedly earning around £165,000 per week, a permanent move could prove expensive.
Villa have other areas requiring investment, particularly with Ezri Konsa’s imminent departure.
Unless Bayern reduce their demands or agree to a subsidised loan, Villa may be better off looking elsewhere.
