Aston Villa are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Atletico Madrid defender Matteo Ruggeri, with an initial fee of €25m agreed between the clubs.

The 24-year-old developed through Atalanta’s academy before moving to Spain last summer, gaining valuable experience in both Serie A and La Liga.

His next challenge now appears set to come in England, with Villa identifying him as the replacement for Lucas Digne following his departure.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Villa have reached a verbal agreement with Atletico worth €25m plus €1.5m in add-ons, while Ruggeri has also agreed personal terms with the Premier League club.

The Italian is expected to travel for his medical and complete the formalities of the transfer this week, although official confirmation is still awaited.

The move would give Unai Emery another option at left-back and provide competition for Ian Maatsen. Ruggeri offers an aggressive defensive approach while also possessing the ability to contribute going forward.

His arrival would also fit Villa’s wider strategy of lowering the squad’s average age and reducing the wage bill while remaining competitive and compliant with financial regulations.

Villa face Borussia Monchengladbach in their final pre-season fixture this weekend, before opening their Premier League campaign against Brighton on August 23.
