AdminManchester United may have landed one of the bargains of the summer by signing Youri Tielemans for just £35m, but Aston Villa will be far less impressed with the midfielder’s departure.
Tielemans joined Villa from Leicester City in 2019 on a free transfer, having previously lifted the FA Cup with the Foxes. He later added the Europa League to his honours list under Unai Emery before making the move to Old Trafford.
The Belgian has already made a positive impression at United, receiving praise from supporters after a lively 25-minute cameo against Paris Saint-Germain during pre-season.
However, his comments about Villa have not gone down well with some of his former supporters.
Speaking on United’s pre-season tour, Tielemans credited Villa with helping him get “back to my best level.” He then appeared to suggest that moving to Manchester United represented a step up in his career.
He concluded: “It is a great achievement for any footballer to end up here. It means you have done well in your career. But it does not end there. I want to be successful.”
According to the BBC, some Villa fans were ‘unhappy’ with the remarks, with criticism quickly spreading online.
The backlash eventually prompted Tielemans to take to social media and apologise for his comments.
