Leicester City manager Russell Martin is reportedly unhappy with the performance of one of his defenders following today’s match against Notts County, with serious questions now being raised over his place in the starting XI.

Caleb Okoli endured a difficult afternoon, struggling to impose himself during the game and failing to provide the level of consistency expected from a player competing for a regular place in Martin’s side.

The centre-back’s display has sparked frustration among supporters, with some fans already questioning whether he should be considered the club’s first-choice option in defence. His performance will certainly give Martin plenty to think about as he continues to shape his preferred starting XI.

“We can’t be starting him as our No. 1 option,” was the blunt reaction surrounding Okoli’s display, highlighting just how much pressure the defender could now face.

Martin is expected to assess his defensive options carefully before Leicester’s next fixture. The manager has made it clear that every player must earn his place through performances, and Okoli’s showing against Notts County may have damaged his chances of securing a regular starting role.

With the new season underway, competition for places is already intense. Okoli will now need to respond strongly in training and upcoming matches if he wants to convince Martin that he can be trusted as a key part of Leicester’s defence.

For now, however, questions remain over whether the Italian defender can establish himself as Martin’s preferred centre-back.
