Aston Villa may feel they were denied a crucial opportunity to take the lead against Hull City after Nicolas Jackson went down inside the box shortly before half-time.
With the score still 0-0, the incident could have completely changed the course of the game. Villa were struggling to find a way through Hull’s defence but had created the better opportunities before the break.
Michael Oliver waved away the appeals, with VAR checking the decision but ultimately choosing not to intervene. The match eventually finished goalless, making the decision even more significant.
Former PGMOL chief and FIFA referee Keith Hackett has now given his verdict on the incident, and believes Villa had a strong case for a penalty.
A dangerous ball was played towards Jackson, with Hull defender Nobel Mendy appearing to push the striker as he attempted to reach it.

Hackett said: “There is a clear shove and I can fully understand the claims for a penalty kick by Aston Villa.
Referee Michael Oliver is in a good viewing position and obviously determines that there is insufficient force in the push and the Villa player went to ground too easily.
“On this occasion, my observation swings towards a foul and an award of a penalty kick.”
For Unai Emery, the focus must now turn towards ending Villa’s frustrating run and converting their chances into victories.
