West Ham United have been handed a major boost with Tomas Soucek returning to team training after almost three months on the sidelines with an ankle ligament injury.
The 31-year-old Czech Republic international picked up the injury during his country’s World Cup group-stage clash with Mexico in June, leaving Nuno Espirito Santo without one of his most experienced midfielders as West Ham began their promotion campaign.
According to an exclusive report by Sam Tabuteau for the Evening Standard on September 10, Soucek has now returned to group sessions while continuing individual fitness work. The club are taking a cautious approach and are unlikely to throw him straight into a full workload.
Nuno also has concerns over Taty Castellanos, who is being monitored after experiencing tendon pain, while goalkeeper Alphonse Areola is undergoing daily checks after suffering a dead leg.

West Ham will be hoping Soucek’s eventual return can provide the physicality, discipline and experience required in the Championship. His aerial strength, work rate and ability to arrive late in the box could prove valuable.
The midfielder’s return also gives Nuno another reliable option in the centre of the pitch. Rather than rushing him back, a gradual build-up should allow Soucek to regain his sharpness and fitness before taking on a bigger role in West Ham’s promotion push.
