Nicolas Jackson appears to be growing in confidence at Aston Villa, with John McGinn admitting the striker already looks a different player from the one who arrived at the club last month.

Jackson scored his first Premier League goal for Villa during Saturday’s victory over Tottenham, doubling the visitors’ advantage after Johan Manzambi had opened the scoring before half-time.

Emi Buendia later added a third before Spurs mounted a late fightback, but Unai Emery’s side held on for a valuable win.

McGinn was delighted to see Jackson finally get off the mark and believes the forward can play a key role in filling the void left by Ollie Watkins.

The Scotland international also revealed he had to intervene during Jackson’s goal celebration because the striker was already booked.

“Before the game, the manager spoke to us in detail about what he wanted and how we could maybe exploit some space,” McGinn said on TNT. “I think with Nicolas Jackson’s goal, he’ll be delighted because we worked on that quite a lot beforehand.

“Nicolas seems a lot more confident. He had a tough time, obviously, at Chelsea and Bayern, and never played a lot. So it’s about finding his confidence.

“He’s a great worker for the team, and if he can score goals like this, it’d be magic.

“And I had to calm him down there – he was on a yellow!”
