West Ham United manager Nuno Espírito Santo has been handed another tactical boost, with Soungoutou Magassa and Edson Alvarez reportedly doing enough to force their way back into contention.

With Tomas Soucek now back from injury, competition for midfield places is stronger than ever. However, the pair offer Nuno something beyond their ability in the middle of the pitch: both can also operate at centre-back.

Alvarez has spent much of his career as a defensive midfielder but has regularly played in defence for both club and country.

The Mexico international featured at centre-back during spells with Club América, Ajax and the national team.

His strength, aerial ability and composure could make him a reliable option when defensive adjustments are required.

Magassa provides similar versatility. The Frenchman established himself at Monaco as a left-sided centre-back during the 2023/24 campaign, helping the club finish second in Ligue 1.

For Nuno, having two midfielders capable of dropping into defence provides valuable tactical flexibility.

Injuries or suspensions would not necessarily force a major reshuffle, while the manager could also switch between a back four and back three during matches.

In a demanding Championship campaign, that versatility could prove crucial. With both players focused on securing regular involvement, Nuno has more options at his disposal, while Nils Koppen’s suggestion that January could be a quiet transfer window may become easier to understand.
