AdminTottenham Hotspur’s unpredictable season has taken another turn for the worse, with midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur handed a seven-game domestic suspension by the FA following culturally offensive comments made during a Uruguayan TV interview in June.
The £75,000-a-week midfielder, who recently scored in Spurs’ disappointing 2-1 loss to Ipswich Town, caused anger when he commented on teammate Son Heung-min, saying: “They all look the same.”
This remark, made while discussing a shirt for a fan, has not only led to the ban but also a £100,000 fine.
Bentancur will miss crucial Premier League fixtures, including matches against Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool, as well as a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester United. He is expected to return on Boxing Day against Nottingham Forest.
An FA statement confirmed the suspension, noting that Bentancur had been found guilty of “abusive and/or insulting words” with reference to nationality and race. Despite his denial, the ruling was confirmed.
Meanwhile, Spurs’ injury struggles continue with Wilson Odobert facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The summer signing from Burnley has undergone surgery on a hamstring injury, with former Tottenham scout Bryan King revealing the winger is unlikely to return before late February.
“It’s a tough blow for someone so young,” King told Tottenham News. “He was progressing well, but this surgery will set him back significantly.”
