Leicester City have moved to secure the future of Nathan Opoku, with the striker putting pen to paper on a new contract that prevents him leaving on a free transfer this summer.

The Ghanaian forward, currently on loan at League Two side Newport County, has extended his stay at the King Power Stadium by a further year, tying him to the club until the summer of 2027.
Opoku arrived in January 2023 after impressing in the American college system. He is yet to make a senior appearance for City, having spent 18 months on loan at sister club OH Leuven. His progress was halted by a serious leg fracture that ruled him out for a year.
Last summer, he linked up with Newport alongside Sammy Braybrooke. While the midfielder moved on to Chesterfield in January, Opoku remained with the Exiles, with his loan now running until the end of the campaign.
He has featured 23 times in League Two, scoring five goals to sit as the club’s joint-leading marksman. Newport’s fortunes have improved under manager Christian Fuchs, though they remain in the relegation zone on goal difference with 10 games remaining.
With Opoku turning 25 this summer, his pathway into City’s first team remains uncertain. However, the new deal gives Leicester time to assess his future, or potentially secure a transfer fee should they opt to sell.
