AdminGary Rowett did not attempt to dress it up when he assessed the challenge facing Leicester City, offering a brutally honest verdict on the squad he has inherited at a crucial stage of the campaign.
With the pressure growing and the battle at the wrong end of the table becoming more intense by the week, the Leicester manager admitted his group may not naturally be built for the fight that now lies ahead.
It was a candid moment from a manager who has quickly gained a reputation for speaking plainly rather than hiding behind rehearsed answers.
Rowett openly said:
“We probably don’t really have a squad who are designed for a relegation battle’
Those words will undoubtedly strike a chord with supporters who have watched Leicester struggle to find the resilience required in recent weeks.
Survival battles are often decided not only by quality on the ball, but by mentality, aggression and the ability to cope with tense moments, and Rowett’s comments suggested he feels his side are still learning how to handle that environment.
Rather than avoiding the issue, the City boss chose to confront it publicly, acknowledging the reality of the situation.
Some managers prefer to protect their players with softer language, but Rowett’s honesty underlined the scale of the task in front of him.
Saying it as it is, Rowett made it clear that Leicester’s biggest challenge may not just be tactical, but psychological, in the difficult weeks that remain this season.
