Jamaal Lascelles once again showed the leadership that made him such a respected figure at Newcastle United, despite Leicester City’s relegation to League One being confirmed on Tuesday night.
The 32-year-old only arrived at the King Power Stadium in January on a short-term deal, brought in to add experience and character to a struggling squad. But after a 2-2 draw with Hull City, Leicester’s second successive relegation became a reality.

The result sparked anger among supporters, many of whom waited outside the stadium after the final whistle demanding answers from players and club officials. While the rest of the squad stayed away, Lascelles was the only Leicester player to step forward and face the furious crowd.
In a video shared on social media, the former Newcastle captain stood in front of supporters as frustration poured out around him, with fans questioning why he was the only one willing to confront them.
For Newcastle supporters, it was a familiar sight. Lascelles built his reputation on honesty during difficult moments and was known for challenging team-mates publicly when standards slipped.
Even during the latter stages of his time at St James’ Park, when his appearances became less frequent, he remained club captain because of the respect he carried behind the scenes.
Lascelles’ contract expires this summer, and his future remains uncertain, but his reaction on a painful night underlined exactly why he has long been regarded as a leader wherever he has played.
