There has been little to suggest Gary Rowett has made a convincing case to become Leicester City’s permanent manager.

The clearest sign of supporter feeling came during the 2-2 draw with Hull City. Leicester were 2-1 ahead when Rowett introduced Harry Winks, and the reaction from the stands was immediate.

Boos rang around the stadium almost as soon as the midfielder stepped onto the pitch, underlining the frustration that has been building among sections of the fanbase.

Rowett’s decision was seen by some as an attempt to show authority, yet it quickly backfired as Leicester surrendered their advantage.

Supporters can often be emotional in the moment, but on this occasion many felt their concerns were justified. While Jordan James needed to come off, turning to Winks after his recent history with both the club and supporters was always likely to provoke a response.

Rowett had other options available and could have chosen a different route. Instead, the substitution became the talking point of the afternoon and only increased the scrutiny on his judgement.

There remains a sense that Rowett may have produced more had he been able to call upon key players for longer during his spell. Even so, his handling of the Winks situation has done little to strengthen his position.

For many supporters, Leicester now need a fresh direction, both in the dugout and with Winks’ long-term future at the club.
