Leicester City have officially confirmed the appointment of Russell Martin as their new head coach ahead of the 2026/27 League One campaign, with the former Southampton boss inheriting one of the biggest rebuilding jobs in the club’s modern history.
The Foxes have suffered a dramatic fall from grace over the past decade. Just ten years after lifting the Premier League title under Claudio Ranieri, Leicester now find themselves preparing for only the second League One season in their history following a second relegation from the top flight in three years.

Martin arrives on a three-year contract with supporters divided over the appointment. While he guided Southampton back to the Premier League in 2024, his spells at Southampton and Rangers also attracted criticism, leaving questions over whether his possession-based approach can succeed in League One.
Football League World’s Leicester City fan pundit Jamie Preston believes the new manager’s priority is reshaping a squad that has become disconnected from the club.
“I think he’s got some major issues to sort out, but the biggest one is the squad.
“He’s got a lot of players that don’t want to be there, and are not interested in being there, want to get away and have said they don’t want to play in League One,” he claimed.
Preston also stressed the need to reduce Leicester’s wage bill, clear out unwanted players and provide more opportunities for academy talent.
With several departures expected this summer, Martin faces a crucial few months as Leicester attempt to build a squad capable of challenging for an immediate return to the Championship.
