Leicester City’s two summer signings are set to take the next step in their preparations this week after missing the club’s opening pre-season friendly against Burton Albion.

The new arrivals were not included in the squad for Saturday’s comfortable 3-0 victory, with the coaching staff choosing to manage their workloads after lengthy breaks from competitive football.

Instead, both players remained at the training ground to continue building fitness before linking up fully with the squad.

The Foxes will now travel to Spain for a warm-weather training camp, where they are scheduled to face Cadiz and Malaga as preparations for the new Championship season continue.

Conor Chaplin joined Leicester on a three-year deal following his departure from Ipswich Town, while experienced goalkeeper Alex McCarthy reunited with head coach Russell Martin after leaving Southampton at the end of his contract.

Martin confirmed after the Burton win that both players, along with Harry Souttar, would join the squad in Spain.

“They trained this morning with us – I’m feeling my legs a little bit,” Martin said. “We put them through a session.

“They’ve been off for a long time so they’re not ready to play minutes yet, Harry Souttar the same. So the three had a session at the training ground today before we left, which they enjoyed.

“They absolutely attacked it. They are three brilliant people, characters and players, to add to us next week in Spain.”

Explaining why he was keen to bring both signings to the King Power Stadium, Martin added: “Promotion experience, brilliant character.

One of them [McCarthy] I’ve worked with and one I’ve known for a long time, not personally but known of him, he’s from a similar area to me.

“Experience, character, leadership and hunger to be here. Both had offers in the Championship, Alex had one in the Premier League as well.

So both are desperate to be here, that’s what we need to play for Leicester City and to be involved in the process that we want to embark on. They’re going to be huge for us and we’re really excited to have them in.”
