Ipswich Town manager Gary O’Neil has admitted he was disappointed to see long-serving winger Wes Burns leave the club for Leicester City this summer.
The 31-year-old had been a key figure at Portman Road, playing an important role in three promotions during Kieran McKenna’s tenure and becoming a firm favourite among the Ipswich supporters.
Burns signed a one-year contract extension at the beginning of July, with the expectation that he would remain part of O’Neil’s plans for the new season. However, just a month later, Leicester City secured his services for a nominal fee believed to be around £75,000.
The winger subsequently agreed a three-year contract with the recently relegated League One side.
O’Neil explained that while Burns’ departure was disappointing, the club could not stand in the way of such an opportunity given his contribution over the years.
He said: “I actually played with Wes for a bit at Bristol City! He’s had an unbelievable career from that moment and given great service to this club.

“It was right that he stayed here. We thought he’d be with us this season and that was the right decision.
“But of course if something comes up like a three-year contract then there’s no way that anyone at this club is going to stand in his way with what he’s given.
“I’m disappointed that we’re not going to have him here, but I’m pleased for him.
“The service that he provided to this club will be remembered for a long time. I know everyone’s here very thankful for what he produced.”
