Aston Villa have suffered a setback in their pursuit of Roger Ibañez, with the Brazilian defender rejecting their approach and choosing to remain at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli.
Villa had stepped up their interest in the 27-year-old after initially monitoring his situation, with reports suggesting the defender had paused contract negotiations with his current club.
The Premier League side subsequently made an offer, but it has now been turned down.
According to Sacha Tavolieri, Ibañez has “reiterated his desire” to continue his career in Saudi Arabia, despite the opportunity to return to European football under Unai Emery at Villa Park.
The decision comes after several Premier League clubs reportedly showed interest in the centre-back, while Villa had maintained contact with his representatives.
Their latest proposal indicated they were ready to push ahead with a deal, but Ibañez has made his position clear.
Al-Ahli have also strengthened their case by improving their financial package for the defender.

The Saudi club have increased the salary included in their proposed new contract, giving Ibañez another reason to remain where he is.
The situation has changed considerably in just a few days. Ibañez had previously halted renewal talks, opening the door for interest from England.
Villa then made their move, but Al-Ahli responded quickly with an improved offer.
For now, Ibañez has chosen to stay, leaving Villa’s hopes of bringing him back to Europe on hold.
