Aston Villa endured a nightmare start to the new Premier League season as João Gomes was sent off during their disastrous 4-0 defeat to Brighton.
Gomes, making his Premier League debut for Villa after his summer move from Wolves, was initially shown a yellow card following an incident involving Brighton midfielder Georginio Rutter.
However, VAR intervened and the decision was upgraded to a straight red card for violent conduct.
The dismissal added to an already miserable afternoon for Unai Emery’s side, who were four goals down before half-time.
Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has now spoken about the incident, with his assessment likely to attract plenty of attention from Villa supporters.
The decision came after Gomes had already endured a difficult opening period, with the midfielder also involved in the build-up to Brighton’s second goal.

Villa were unable to recover after the red card, while Brighton controlled the game comfortably in the second half.
For Gomes, it was a debut he will want to forget quickly. The £34 million signing arrived at Villa Park with high expectations, but his first Premier League appearance for the club ended in frustration and an early dismissal.
The midfielder will now face further scrutiny as Villa attempt to recover from one of the worst possible starts to their campaign.
