Aston Villa are preparing for another demanding season after a remarkable campaign that saw Unai Emery’s side win the Europa League and finish fourth in the Premier League.

The summer has brought significant change, with Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne and Ezri Konsa all leaving Villa Park.

Several new faces have arrived, while Leon Goretzka is reportedly set to add further experience and quality to Emery’s midfield.

Goretzka could prove particularly important following Tielemans’ departure and Amadou Onana’s injury.

The Bayern Munich midfielder has been described as a “machine” by teammate Aleksandar Pavlović, highlighting the physicality and experience he could bring to Villa.

However, Villa could face another major decision if Ollie Watkins leaves amid interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.

Watkins reportedly wants to explore the move, meaning Emery would need another striker despite having Tammy Abraham and Brian Madjo available.

According to reporter Tom Collomosse, Villa have enquired about Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta. Palace, though, have no intention of selling the Frenchman.

Mateta has previously attracted interest from AC Milan and came close to a £30m move in January before failing his medical. He later rediscovered his form in the Premier League.

Wayne Rooney has called Mateta “one of the best strikers in Europe”, and his physical presence could make him an ideal Watkins replacement.

While Goretzka would strengthen midfield, Mateta could give Villa a proven Premier League option up front and provide Emery with another experienced focal point in attack.
