West Ham United’s defensive display against Millwall has raised questions over whether their current centre-back pairing is ready for a potential return to the Premier League.
Konstantinos Mavropanos and Maximillian Kilman have both received plenty of praise this season, although for very different reasons.
Mavropanos has become a major threat from set-pieces, scoring four goals in seven Championship appearances, including the late equaliser against Millwall.
Kilman, meanwhile, has impressed with his improvement after a difficult opening two years at the club, when mistakes regularly made him a target for supporters. This season, however, the former Wolves defender has looked far more composed.
There remain concerns over Mavropanos’ defensive performances and his ability to contribute during build-up play.
His passing can disrupt West Ham’s attacking rhythm, particularly when goalkeeper Hermansen looks to play out from the back.

When possession goes through Kilman, West Ham generally build more effectively. Mavropanos, by contrast, has struggled to consistently find midfield options and can resort to hopeful long balls that do not suit the team’s approach.
His goals have undoubtedly been crucial, but questions remain over whether he can produce the same level of performance defensively.
Both defenders appear more than capable at Championship level, but promotion would bring a significant test. West Ham may therefore need to strengthen at centre-back next summer if they return to the Premier League.
