West Ham United have several issues to address before they can seriously consider a return to the Premier League, with their struggles from the penalty spot emerging as a major concern.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are now three games without a victory in all competitions following consecutive Championship draws. Their latest setback came on Friday night when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Queens Park Rangers.
The result leaves the Hammers third in the Championship table after nine matches. While their position remains respectable, it falls short of the expectations of supporters who hoped to see them leading the promotion race.
One problem Nuno must solve is his side’s disappointing penalty record. However, summer signing Arne Engels could provide a solution if the West Ham manager is prepared to make a bold decision.
West Ham’s penalty problems
West Ham have been awarded three penalties in the Championship this season but have converted only one.
Taty Castellanos started the worrying trend against Charlton Athletic in the second game of the campaign, missing a late opportunity to secure a point.

Jarrod Bowen then suffered a similar disappointment against QPR, seeing his 91st-minute penalty saved by Pierce Charles, costing West Ham a chance to claim all three points.
Lincoln City present another challenge
West Ham face Lincoln City on Wednesday, knowing they cannot afford another costly miss.
After collecting 103 points to win League One last season, Lincoln have adapted well to the Championship, taking 11 points from their opening nine matches.
The Imps have also conceded no penalties this season, making it even more important for West Ham to take advantage if another opportunity arises.
