Russell Martin has hinted that Woyo Coulibaly could be handed a starting role at right-back when Leicester City face Doncaster Rovers in League One, with the position still up for grabs following Jayden Joseph’s injury.

Joseph established himself as City’s first choice in the position, starting five of their opening six matches.

However, he has been unavailable since before last month’s draw against Barnsley and is expected to remain sidelined for several more weeks.

Bade Aluko has filled in during Joseph’s absence, starting against Barnsley and Peterborough United.

The 19-year-old was substituted at half-time in both matches, struggling particularly during last week’s 3-1 defeat to Peterborough.

Centre-back Caleb Okoli also featured at right-back during the second half against Peterborough, leaving Martin with several options ahead of Saturday’s encounter.

The Leicester boss has challenged his players to seize the opportunity and establish themselves in the position.

“He [Joseph] was one of our best players, and no-one’s really nailed that down since he left,” he said. “Someone has to take the opportunity at some point and make it their own.”

Coulibaly is now emerging as a genuine alternative after failing to secure a summer move away from the club. The Malian has managed just 45 minutes of league football this season.

“We have options, we also have centre-halves that can play there,” he added. “Coulibaly, we trust, and if it’s Bade again, he needs to react really positively to a disappointment last week, the same way that so many of us do.

“I’ve got no doubt whoever it is, they’ll be more than ready and Woyo definitely comes into the mix for that.”
