Leicester City face an anxious wait over Jordan James ahead of Saturday’s crucial Championship clash at Fratton Park, with the midfielder’s persistent heel problem continuing to cause concern.

James suffered the injury while away with Wales national football team and has struggled to shake it off since returning to the club.

Although he appeared from the bench in last weekend’s defeat to Swansea City, the expectation that he would be ready to start against Portsmouth has now faded.

Gary Rowett admitted the issue remains unresolved and suggested the midfielder may once again have to be managed carefully.

“We’ve got a couple we need to monitor to see how they are,” manager Gary Rowett said on the fitness of his squad at his press conference on Thursday.

“JJ is the main one. His heel has still been sore and problematic, which was why I didn’t start him at the weekend. There’s every chance we might still be in that position on Saturday.

“The challenge with the injury he’s got, it’s a sore heel that every time he trains or comes on for 20 minutes, it irritates it and that sets him back a couple of days.

“So he feels good, he has to train to then be available because we need to know that he’s fit and can get through periods of the game.”

Leicester are also monitoring Aaron Ramsey, while Ben Nelson, Caleb Okoli and Victor Kristiansen remain unavailable for a match that could shape the club’s survival hopes.
