José Mourinho has once again placed himself at the centre of a major transfer storyline, with reports suggesting the experienced Portuguese coach is pushing for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes as the summer window heats up.
Fernandes, 21, has quickly emerged as one of West Ham’s most valuable assets despite a turbulent season that ended in relegation.

The Portuguese international, who joined the Hammers in a deal worth around £38–42m, has impressed with his composure, ball progression and maturity beyond his years, making him a key target for several European giants.
According to multiple reports, Mourinho—now shaping plans for a potential return to Real Madrid—has personally identified Fernandes as a player he wants at the Bernabéu.
The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Roma boss is said to believe the midfielder could provide long-term control and energy in midfield, particularly if departures occur in Madrid’s current squad structure.
West Ham, however, are not willing sellers. The club are understood to have placed an £80 million valuation on Fernandes, viewing him as one of the cornerstones of their Championship rebuild. Despite financial pressure following relegation, the Hammers are preparing to resist early offers unless their valuation is met in full.
Manchester United and Arsenal are also monitoring the situation closely, setting up what could become a multi-club bidding war. United are believed to be particularly active in midfield recruitment, while Arsenal continue to track young, high-ceiling talents across Europe.
Fernandes himself is reportedly open to remaining at a top-level club, but with West Ham now outside the Premier League, his future remains uncertain heading into a decisive summer.
With Mourinho’s interest adding further weight to an already crowded transfer battle, West Ham face a crucial decision: cash in on their rising star or attempt to build around him in the Championship.
