Leicester City have completed another key addition to Russell Martin’s coaching team after appointing a new goalkeeping coach ahead of the new season.

The latest arrival continues Martin’s rebuild behind the scenes at Seagrave as he assembles a backroom staff capable of leading the Foxes into a new era.

Having already spent time working with first-team goalkeepers Jakub Stolarczyk, Fran Vieites and Stevie Bausor, the experienced coach has now officially taken on the role.

Leicester confirmed the news in a statement on Wednesday, saying: “We are pleased to confirm a further update to our First Team Staff with the appointment of Tom Weal as Goalkeeping Coach.”

Weal arrives from MK Dons and becomes the latest member of Martin’s coaching team, joining assistant manager Conor Hourihane and fitness coach Rhys Owen.

Club legend Andy King also remains part of the first-team staff as preparations continue for the new season.

The club added: “A vastly experienced goalkeeping coach, Weal has worked across senior and academy football for Huddersfield Town, Nottingham Forest, Norwich City, Notts County, Carlisle United, Sunderland as well as two spells at MK Dons – who he rejoined last summer after helping Sunderland return to the Premier League.”

Leicester had been searching for a permanent goalkeeping coach since Javi Ortiz left the club following Marti Cifuentes’ departure in January.

During that period, Lead Academy goalkeeping coach Glyn Thompson stepped up to oversee the first-team goalkeepers.

The Foxes have also been without a long-serving specialist in the role since Mike Stowell’s departure, making Weal’s arrival another important step in Martin’s rebuilding project.
