James Maddison has opened up about the decision that brought his Leicester City career to an end, revealing the main reason he chose to join Tottenham Hotspur in a move that caught many supporters by surprise.

The England international left the Foxes in the summer of 2023 after Leicester’s relegation from the Premier League.

Having established himself as one of the club’s most influential players, his departure marked the end of a successful five-year spell at the King Power Stadium.

Speaking about the transfer, Maddison explained that his ambition to continue playing at the highest level was the biggest factor behind his decision.

He admitted that the opportunity to remain in the Premier League and compete for European football played a major role in his choice.

“I wanted to keep testing myself at the highest level and continue challenging myself every week,” Maddison said.

The midfielder also praised Leicester for the role the club played in his development, saying he would always be grateful for the support he received from the fans, his teammates and everyone connected with the club.

Although many Leicester supporters were disappointed to see him leave, Maddison insisted the decision was never about disrespecting the club. Instead, he viewed it as the right step for the next stage of his career.

His comments have once again sparked debate among football fans, with many reflecting on what could have been had Leicester remained in the Premier League.
