AdminUnai Emery has addressed Ollie Watkins’ absence from Aston Villa’s squad after the club suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Brighton on the opening day.
Villa endured a miserable afternoon as Brighton produced a commanding performance, leaving Emery’s side with plenty of questions to answer.
One of the biggest talking points surrounding the team was the absence of Watkins, who was not included in the matchday squad.
The England international’s omission immediately attracted attention, particularly given his importance to Villa’s attacking plans.
With the team struggling to find a cutting edge in front of goal, supporters were left wondering why their experienced striker was unavailable for such an important fixture.
Following the defeat, Emery was asked about Watkins and his decision to leave the forward out of the squad. However, the Villa boss made it clear that the question was better directed towards the player himself.
“This question is for him.”
Emery’s response is likely to fuel further speculation surrounding Watkins, especially with the striker’s future having been the subject of attention during the summer.
For now, Villa must focus on recovering from a damaging opening-day result. A four-goal defeat is not the start Emery would have wanted, and the manager will be under pressure to find solutions quickly.
Watkins’ situation will also remain one to watch closely, with supporters waiting for a clearer explanation about why he was absent as Villa look to bounce back from their disappointing start.
