Aston Villa’s 4-0 defeat to Brighton on Sunday exposed serious problems for Unai Emery, with the Spaniard forced to field a weakened side following a difficult transfer window.
Joao Gomes was sent off on his debut, while Pau Torres and Victor Lindelof struggled badly. Emi Buendia was even deployed as a false nine after Ollie Watkins’ controversial absence.
Watkins, Villa’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer, refused to travel to the Amex and stayed at home.
Emery was asked about the striker afterwards and said: “This question is for him. I can answer only with my silence. I think you call his agent and he can respond. He can only explain his answer, I can’t.”
Although Watkins returned to Bodymoor Heath on Monday, his relationship with the supporters could now be severely damaged.
With the 30-year-old apparently considering his future elsewhere, Villa may have to make a difficult decision before the transfer window closes.
The club have already started exploring alternatives, with AC Milan forward Rafael Leão reportedly emerging as a possible target.

Journalist Antonio Vitiello claims initial discussions have taken place between Villa and Milan, although no formal bid has been submitted.
Galatasaray are also interested, potentially making negotiations more complicated.
Leão enjoyed another productive Serie A campaign, averaging 1.2 shots on target per 90 minutes and completing 1.3 successful take-ons per 90. His direct running and attacking threat could provide Emery with the quality needed to replace Watkins.
With time running out, Villa must resolve the Watkins situation quickly if they want to make a serious move for Leão.
