Exclusive: Aston Villa join the race to sign Newcastle’s top target after a deadline-day move fell through. The player also wants to join Villa.

Newcastle United and Aston Villa are expected to revive their interest in Bayer Leverkusen forward Christian Kofane when the transfer window reopens in January.

The 20-year-old Cameroon international attracted significant Premier League attention during the final stages of the summer window, with both clubs exploring a potential move. However, neither side managed to complete a deal before deadline day.

Kofane will now remain in Germany for the first half of the season, giving Newcastle and Villa further time to assess whether the young forward should become a priority target in January.

According to Football Insider, both clubs plan to continue monitoring Kofane ahead of a possible winter transfer.

The striker is viewed as a player with “huge upside”, while his early-season performances have further increased his reputation.

Kofane enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, registering seven goals and six assists in all competitions.

He has also started the 2026-27 season strongly, scoring twice in his opening two appearances.

Newcastle’s interest fits their move towards recruiting younger players with significant development potential, while Villa have also undergone major changes to their squad.

However, competition could emerge for Kofane’s signature. His pace, technical ability and potential make him an attractive option for both clubs.

The biggest obstacle could be the asking price. Leverkusen are unlikely to welcome selling such a promising talent midway through the season, especially if his impressive form continues.
