Unai Emery has refused to shed light on Ollie Watkins’ absence from Aston Villa’s heavy defeat to Brighton, amid growing speculation over the England striker’s future.

Watkins was not involved as Villa suffered a damaging 4-0 defeat, with reports continuing to link the forward with a move to Saudi Arabia.

His omission has inevitably raised questions, particularly with interest from clubs in the Saudi Pro League intensifying.

Asked about Watkins after the final whistle, Emery offered a cryptic response that appeared to suggest the decision was not entirely straightforward.

“I can answer only with my silence”

The remark has fuelled further speculation that Watkins may have been reluctant to feature, although Emery stopped short of directly confirming that the striker had refused to play.

Villa’s defeat was a miserable afternoon for Emery’s side, who struggled to contain Brighton and offered little attacking threat throughout the match.

Watkins’ absence was particularly noticeable given his importance to the team in recent seasons.

The 30-year-old remains one of Villa’s key attacking players, but uncertainty surrounding his future has now cast another shadow over the club.

With the Saudi Arabian interest reportedly gathering momentum, Villa supporters will be desperate for clarity.

Emery’s carefully chosen words, however, have done little to calm the situation and could lead to even more questions about Watkins’ future at Villa Park.
