Aston Villa are reportedly closing in on a new contract for Amadou Onana despite the midfielder facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.
Foot Mercato journalist Sébastien Denis provided the latest update on X, claiming Villa are prepared to extend the Belgium international’s stay at Villa Park.
Onana suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament while representing Belgium at the World Cup in July. The 25-year-old collided with Christian Pulisic during Belgium’s 4-1 victory over the USA and was forced off after just 18 minutes.
Villa sporting director Damian Vidagany confirmed last month that Onana is expected to miss the entire season, leaving Unai Emery short of options in midfield. The club responded by signing João Gomes and Leon Goretzka during the summer window.
However, Onana’s injury has apparently done nothing to change Villa’s plans for his future.

According to Denis, the Europa League winners are now working on a contract extension that would keep Onana at the club until 2031. His current agreement runs until 2029.
Denis also used an hourglass emoji alongside the word ‘official’, suggesting an announcement could be imminent.
The decision to reward Onana so early in his recovery is a significant show of faith from Emery and the club.
Onana joined Villa from Everton in July 2024 for a reported £50m (€58.2m). He has made 72 appearances, scored seven goals and helped Villa win the Europa League.
