Leicester City technical director James McCarron has defended the club’s decision to appoint Russell Martin as manager, explaining why the Foxes believe the 40-year-old can lead them back to success despite their disappointing start to the League One campaign.
Martin was appointed during the summer following Leicester’s relegation to the third tier. However, his first few months at the King Power Stadium have proved difficult, with Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Peterborough United leaving City 17th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone.
Leicester have recorded only two wins from their opening eight matches, raising concerns among supporters about the manager’s future.
Speaking to BBC Radio Leicester before the Peterborough game, McCarron explained the thinking behind Martin’s appointment.
“We really wanted a manager who knew the leagues inside out, who knew English football and who could really impose a certain style of football that we fully believe in as a football club and that helps us win matches,” the technical director said.
“Russell’s evidenced his ability to do that across League One, the Championship, Scottish division and Premier League.

“He’s had experience in all of those leagues, he’s implemented a clear style wherever he’s been and we feel, if we can give him the right squad, support and direction of alignment, we can be successful just like he was at Southampton.”
McCarron also stressed the importance of patience following significant summer changes.
“When you can control the ball and dominate territory, and you do that with courage and intensity, that gives you the best opportunity to win games week in, week out,” he added.
He acknowledged there would be setbacks but insisted the club remained convinced Martin’s philosophy could deliver consistent results over time.
