Belgian defender Wout Faes has pointed to the departure of Enzo Maresca as a turning point in Leicester City’s ongoing struggles.

The centre-back, currently on loan at AS Monaco, struggled for game time under Leicester’s management before his move, making just 944 minutes across 16 Championship appearances.

Faes’ situation worsened when Marti Cifuentes chose not to utilise him from December onwards, prompting the switch to Monaco, where he has since settled comfortably. Meanwhile, Leicester remain perilously close to the relegation zone, just two points from safety.

Speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, Faes offered a candid assessment of his former club, saying: “If you look at the standings in the Championship, you can imagine what things are like there at the moment.

Since the departure of Maresca, it has collapsed like a house of cards. It is a real shame, because Leicester City is and remains a wonderful club, with tremendous potential.”

Faes has also expressed interest in making his move to Monaco permanent. Given his inconsistent displays in the Championship, including defensive errors and lapses in pace, a permanent exit now seems inevitable.

His public critique of the club will do little to endear him to supporters, but it may smooth the way for a final transfer.

For Leicester, facilitating Faes’ departure would not only remove a player who has struggled to influence results but also provide financial relief.

With Profit and Sustainability Regulations pressuring the club, funds freed from his exit could be reinvested into younger talent, offering hope for a long-term rebuild.
