Leicester City are facing the grim reality of a second season in League One for the first time since the club was founded in 1884, completing a stunning collapse that has unfolded in full view over the last two years.

Only 12 months ago, the Foxes were celebrating promotion back to the Premier League after winning the Championship title under Enzo Maresca.

The contrast with the club that famously lifted the Premier League trophy under Claudio Ranieri a decade ago could hardly be sharper.

Their relegation was confirmed with three matches remaining following a damaging 2-2 draw against Hull City on April 21. Ironically, Leicester ended the campaign on a three-match unbeaten run, taking points against Hull, Millwall and Blackburn Rovers, but it did little to disguise what has been a miserable season on and off the pitch.

Despite starting the campaign among the favourites for promotion, Leicester struggled throughout amid financial uncertainty and limited investment in the squad during Marti Cifuentes’ brief spell in charge.

Matters worsened when the club received a six-point deduction for breaching the EFL’s PSR regulations shortly before Gary Rowett’s appointment in February. Even without the deduction, City would only narrowly have avoided relegation.

Former captain Jamie Vardy has now spoken openly about the club’s decline.

“I watch as many games as I physically can and it’s not nice to see,” Vardy admitted.
