West Ham star has emerged as one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise difficult season for West Ham United, with the Greek defender earning the club’s Hammer of the Year award after a remarkable turnaround in fortunes.

The 28-year-old endured an inconsistent start to life in east London following his move from Stuttgart in 2023.

He struggled for regular Premier League football under David Moyes, Julen Lopetegui and Graham Potter, despite featuring heavily during West Ham’s run to the Europa League quarter-finals.

This season began no differently. Mavropanos was left on the bench for the opening league matches against Sunderland and Chelsea, with West Ham conceding eight goals in the process.

His return to the side for the 3-0 victory at Nottingham Forest immediately steadied the defence, and from there he slowly became one of the club’s most dependable figures.

Even injuries and changes in management failed to derail his progress. Since returning to the starting XI at the beginning of the year, Mavropanos has been a near ever-present, producing a string of committed displays that have won over supporters.

“It’s actually a crazy, crazy feeling.

I can say it’s a crazy achievement and I want to show my appreciation to the fans, because obviously they voted for this award and I’m really happy to be Hammer of the Year.”

The defender finished ahead of Mateus Fernandes and captain Jarrod Bowen in the supporters’ vote.

Known for his fearless style, Mavropanos has become a symbol of fight and determination during West Ham’s relegation battle, throwing himself into challenges and leading from the back when the team needed him most.

“That’s me, I think, giving everything and putting my all into the game!

I think that’s my game style as well. I’m really 100 per cent into it.”

Despite the pressure surrounding the club’s survival hopes, Mavropanos still believes there is one final twist left in the season.

“I just want to say a big thank you and I hope that there is a miracle on Sunday and we can stay in the Premier League.”
