Jannik Vestergaard has brought the curtain down on his international career after confirming he will no longer represent Denmark following the nation’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
The Leicester City defender leaves the international stage with 59 senior caps and three goals to his name. His Denmark debut came against Poland in a friendly on August 14, 2013, beginning a journey that would span more than a decade.

His final appearance arrived on November 15, 2024, when Denmark suffered a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the UEFA Nations League. Vestergaard started the match and completed the full 90 minutes in what proved to be his last outing in national colours.
Attention will now turn to his future at Leicester City, where questions remain over what comes next.
The 33-year-old has one year remaining on his current contract and has experienced a mixed spell at the King Power Stadium since arriving from Southampton in 2021.
His standing within the squad has often depended on the manager in charge. Vestergaard became a key figure under Enzo Maresca, Marti Cifuentes and Gary Rowett, but found opportunities limited under Brendan Rodgers and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The centre-back has made 101 league appearances for Leicester and ended last season looking assured alongside Harry Souttar, who has since been named in Australia’s World Cup squad.
With fellow Danish veteran Kasper Schmeichel also stepping away from international football, a new era is beginning for Denmark.
As for Vestergaard, Leicester appear the most likely destination for the coming season, although a loan move cannot be ruled out as the club weighs up its options.
