Breaking News 🚨: Aston Villa have reached an agreement to sign Lucas Digne’s replacement, with a deal now agreed with the club. Here we go soon! 🚨

Aston Villa have taken a significant step towards solving their left-back problem after reaching an agreement with Atlético Madrid for Matteo Ruggeri.

Unai Emery is keen to strengthen that position, with Lucas Digne expected to leave and Villa needing another experienced option capable of providing width and defensive solidity.

Ruggeri has emerged as the preferred solution, offering the physicality required for Premier League football while also possessing the attacking qualities to operate as an adventurous wing-back.

According to Marca, Villa stepped up their pursuit after identifying the Italian as an ideal replacement for Digne.

Atlético are now willing to sanction his departure following the arrival of Alejandro Grimaldo, which is expected to limit Ruggeri’s opportunities under Diego Simeone.

The two clubs have reportedly agreed a package worth around €18 million, with a further €6 million available in potential bonuses.

Ruggeri registered seven assists in 47 appearances during his only season in Madrid, underlining the attacking threat he can provide from wide areas.

However, the deal is not yet complete. AS reports that Ruggeri has yet to give his final approval, with interest from other English and Italian clubs also on the table.

Villa must now convince him that regular Premier League football and Emery’s project offer the best opportunity for his development and continued progress.
