Newcastle have just entered the race to hijack Aston Villa’s summer signing — the perfect replacement for Morgan Rogers.

Newcastle United are ready to rival Aston Villa for the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha, with the Portugal international emerging as a target for both Premier League clubs.

The 31-year-old has returned to Bayern after spending last season on loan at Tottenham, where he made 45 appearances across all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing three assists.

Palhinha became a popular figure in north London, with his goal in Tottenham’s 1-0 victory over Everton on the final day helping secure their Premier League survival. However, Spurs opted against activating their £26million purchase option.

Despite featuring during Bayern’s pre-season preparations, the Bundesliga champions have made it clear that Palhinha is not part of their long-term plans. Sporting director Max Eberl has reportedly identified him as one of three players available for transfer.

Aston Villa are already in talks over a potential deal as Unai Emery looks to strengthen his midfield following Youri Tielemans’ departure and Amadou Onana’s ACL injury.

Villans director of football Damian Vidagany recently told Bild: “We are in talks, but there is currently no agreement.

“I believe Aston Villa would be a great club for him.”

Newcastle, meanwhile, are also considering Palhinha as new boss Matthias Jaissle seeks more experience in midfield, setting up another transfer battle between the two clubs.
