Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann has expressed his disappointment after his side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, insisting his players failed to make the most of their early dominance.

Goals from John Lundstram and Kamari Doyle secured three important points for Russell Martin’s side, easing some of the pressure on the Leicester boss after growing criticism of his team’s performances.

Doncaster showed late fight, with Alfie May pulling a goal back and giving the visitors hope of snatching an equaliser.

However, they ultimately left empty-handed, remaining 17th in the League One table ahead of difficult fixtures against Stockport County, Sheffield Wednesday and Luton Town.

Reflecting on the defeat, McCann admitted his side had opportunities to take control before Leicester scored.

“I thought for 30 minutes we were in control of the game, but we didn’t do a good enough job with some of the chances,” McCann said.

“We needed to score in that spell. I felt the last ten minutes of the first-half, we went sloppy. We kept giving the ball away.”

The Doncaster manager was particularly frustrated by Lundstram’s opener just before the break.

“We have to stay switched on. It was a poor goal for us to concede, but we rallied. The subs came on and made a difference. Alfie got a good goal.”

McCann also praised the travelling supporters, with more than 2,000 fans making the journey to Leicester.

“I’d have loved to win the game for them. I felt like we had a really good chance if we didn’t conceded that goal on the stroke at half-time.”

He added: “No disrespect to the Harrogates and Newports and Morecambe and teams like that, that we’ve travelled to over the years, because they’re really good football clubs. But this is top quality, big budget, one of the best stadiums. This is a reward for them.”
