Emiliano Martinez could still remain at Aston Villa beyond the 1 September transfer deadline, with sources telling Football Insider that the goalkeeper is running out of options.
The Argentina international had been edging closer to a move to Juventus, but that deal has now collapsed after the Italian giants turned their attention to Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario instead.
Martinez’s ongoing finger injury is understood to have played a major role in the breakdown, with concerns over his fitness likely to remain a factor in any potential transfer.
The 33-year-old is keen to leave Villa Park but wants to continue playing at the highest level. However, his sizeable contract represents another obstacle for interested clubs.
Villa have already prepared for his departure, moving to sign Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki in a deal worth around £30million.
The Japan international is expected to become Unai Emery’s new first-choice goalkeeper, while Marco Bizot is likely to retain his backup role.

That leaves Martinez with little room if he remains at the club, despite Villa not planning for that scenario.
Meanwhile, former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson has backed Villa to make a move for Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli.
The Brazilian is reportedly available for £38m after falling down Mikel Arteta’s pecking order. Borson believes Villa and Newcastle could be ideal destinations, although neither club has made a move so far.
