Aston Villa have emerged as a serious contender for a late transfer target as Unai Emery’s side continues its search for attacking reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

Crystal Palace have already rejected a bid from the Birmingham club for the 29-year-old striker, with the offer falling below their valuation.

Villa’s interest comes amid growing attention surrounding Ollie Watkins, who has attracted interest from Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal.

The player in question is Jean-Philippe Mateta, who could potentially become a direct replacement for Watkins if the England international leaves Villa Park this summer.

However, Mateta’s statistics raise questions over whether he would actually be an upgrade or suitable replacement for Watkins.

According to FotMob on 25 August, the Crystal Palace striker averaged 0.49 goals, 0.59 xG, 2.55 shots and 1.30 shots on target per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season.

He also averaged 0.00 assists, 0.05 xA, 62.2 per cent passing accuracy, 0.36 chances created, 0.08 big chances created and 0.57 successful dribbles.

Watkins, meanwhile, averaged 0.50 goals, 0.48 xG, 2.62 shots, 1.20 shots on target, 0.09 assists, 0.04 xA, 72.7 per cent passing accuracy, 0.73 chances created, 0.13 big chances created and 0.82 successful dribbles per 90.

Although Mateta remains a proven Premier League goalscorer after scoring 12 league goals last season, the numbers suggest Watkins offers greater creativity and a stronger all-round contribution.

Villa could therefore be better off turning their attention towards alternative targets before the transfer window closes.
