AdminAston Villa have been handed a major boost with record signing Johan Manzambi returning to first-team training following a knee injury.
The Swiss international midfielder joined his team-mates on Thursday as he continues his recovery from the problem suffered before his move from Freiburg.
Villa completed a deal worth up to £60 million in July, making Manzambi the most expensive signing in the club’s history.
His return to collective training has raised hopes among supporters that his long-awaited debut could arrive sooner than expected. However, manager Unai Emery is unlikely to take unnecessary risks with the midfielder when Villa travel to Hull City on Saturday.
Manzambi has been following a carefully managed rehabilitation programme, and Emery insists his return must be handled properly.
Speaking about the midfielder’s progress, Emery said: “We must be careful. He had an injury and we want his comeback to be clear and strong, with no risk.
Progressively, he is working individually and is starting collectively with the group this week.”
The timing of Manzambi’s return is particularly important following Villa’s difficult start to the campaign.
Emery’s side have suffered consecutive defeats against Brighton and Arsenal and are still searching for their first points.
Villa have also undergone major changes this summer, with 11 new signings arriving while several established stars departed.
If Manzambi is not involved at Hull, Emery is expected to continue his gradual integration ahead of Villa’s demanding domestic and European schedule.
