Unai Emery has backed George Hemmings to continue making an impact for Aston Villa, describing the youngster as “clearly a Premier League player” while explaining why Alejandro Garnacho may have to wait a little longer for a regular starting role.

Hemmings has emerged as one of the encouraging stories around Villa, having spent last season working closely with Emery and the first-team squad.

His performances have apparently been strong enough to convince the manager that he has what it takes to compete at the highest level.

Emery believes the midfielder’s progress has been particularly impressive and insists there is still more to come from the young player.

“George, he worked with us the whole of last season. He is performing fantastic and getting better.”

That development appears to have influenced Emery’s selection decisions, with Hemmings currently ahead of Garnacho in the manager’s thinking.

Garnacho arrived at Villa with plenty of expectation surrounding him, but Emery has stressed that the former Manchester United winger needs time to adapt before being trusted with more starts.

Rather than rushing him into the team, Emery appears determined to give Garnacho the necessary time to understand his demands and settle into Villa’s system.

For Hemmings, meanwhile, the message from his manager could hardly be clearer. Emery sees him as a genuine Premier League player, and his continued development could earn him an increasingly important role at Villa Park.
