Emi Buendia is in talks with Aston Villa over a new contract after producing an outstanding run of form in 2026.
The Argentine’s current deal runs until June 2027, with Villa understood to hold an option to extend his stay for another 12 months. However, the club are keen to avoid allowing the 29-year-old to enter the final 18 months of his contract, particularly given his growing importance to Unai Emery’s side.
Buendia played a key role in Villa’s Europa League triumph last May, scoring one of the goals of the season as they defeated Freiburg in Istanbul to lift their first major trophy since 1996.
He continued his impressive form before the international break, scoring another stunning goal in Villa’s 3-2 victory at Tottenham. It was his third goal in as many appearances at Spurs’ stadium.

The turnaround has been remarkable. In the summer of 2025, Buendia had fallen so far down the pecking order that he was even offered to city rivals Birmingham. He has since fought his way back into Emery’s plans and is now one of the manager’s most trusted attacking players.
In November last year, Emery praised his determination. ‘Everything that happened around him, he deserved it because he worked hard to recover his best form as a player,’ he said.
‘When we decided to keep him here, and he decided to stay here as well, I was confident he could get the numbers he is achieving.’
