AdminAston Villa and Unai Emery’s rebuilding project have already faced plenty of criticism this season, with some questioning whether the Spaniard will remain at the club.
“I think he’ll [Emery] walk away from Aston Villa,” said Les Ferdinand on the Overlap. Ally McCoist agreed on Talksport: “Surely at some point Unai Emery is going to say, what’s the point?”
Those comments followed Villa’s 4-0 defeat at Brighton on the opening weekend, a match they entered with several key players injured, most summer arrivals unavailable and no fit striker available to start.
Yet weeks later, Arsenal suffered a 3-0 defeat at the same ground. The difference was that few questioned Mikel Arteta’s position.
Jeff Stelling was also critical, saying: “I’m sorry to pick out individuals, but if you’re starting games with Pau Torres and Victor Lindelof you’re going to lose more than you win,” despite both players starting in Villa’s Europa League final victory in May.
However, Villa’s summer rebuild is beginning to take shape. Six of the ten new signings started together against Tottenham, offering a glimpse of Emery’s developing squad.
Since then, several former players turned pundits, including Jamie Carragher, Nigel Reo-Coker and Jason Cundy, have discussed Emery as a potential Manchester United target.
The podcast also examines Zion Suzuki’s tactical role, Johan Manzambi and Jackson’s promising partnership, Leon Goretzka’s potential position and the evolution of Emery’s young squad.
