Spurs have already enjoyed a productive summer, strengthening their back line with the arrivals of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke.
With defensive reinforcements secured, attention has now shifted towards midfield as Roberto De Zerbi looks to add quality and depth ahead of the new campaign.
One of Tottenham’s primary targets is Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali, although any deal is expected to require a fee in the region of £100 million.
Fernandes is another player high on Spurs’ shortlist, with the north London club having already opened discussions with the player’s representatives.
The 21-year-old endured relegation with West Ham last season and could be tempted by an immediate return to the Premier League’s upper reaches. However, Tottenham are not alone in the race.
Manchester United have been monitoring Fernandes for some time and are understood to be preparing an offer of their own. The Old Trafford club are keen to strengthen in midfield and view the Portuguese youngster as a serious option.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said: “It’s true that Tottenham called the agent of the player.
“So, Tottenham had a conversation with the agent of player and are interested in Mateus Fernandes, but at the moment, it’s still early to say where he is going.
“Tottenham calling, Manchester United in talks, Real Madrid under consideration.”
Reports now suggest Fernandes favours a move to Manchester United, with one well-connected Spurs source claiming: ‘He has his heart set out on Utd.’
